Ash Grove boys drop their first two games in Walnut Grove Tournament

The Ash Grove boys and girls basketball teams are both competing in the Walnut Grove Holiday Classic this week and while the boys are currently 0-2, the girls have split their games so far.
The Pirates took on Sparta Dec. 26, but fell behind 12-3 at the end of the first quarter. Ash Grove battled back and outscored Sparta, 14-4 in the second quarter to take a 17-16 halftime lead.
A close third quarter saw Sparta tie the game at 27-27 heading into the final period of play. Sparta outscored Ash Grove 13-9 in the fourth quarter to take the game, 40-36.
Draven Zeigler led Ash Grove with 15 points and Cody Raney chipped in 12 points in the loss.
The Pirates opened the tournament up on Dec. 20, falling to Billings, 79-55.
Ash Grove led at the end of the first quarter, 20-14, but Billings came out and shut down the Pirates in the second quarter to take a 38-30 lead into the half. Ash Grove entered the tournament as the No. 13 seed.
Another hot shooting third quarter saw Billings increase their lead to 61-39. Billings added another 18 points in the final period to win the game 79-55.
Zeigler led the Pirates with 22 points in the loss.
The Lady Pirates actually got to play their portion of the Walnut Grove Tournament games at home, as the tournament was played in both Walnut Grove and Ash Grove. Ash Grove entered the tournament as the No. 9 seed.
Ash Grove lost to Hartville, 61-44 on Dec. 22. Lady Pirates Briley Bagley and Emma Eagleburger each had 11 points in the loss.
Ash Grove opened the tournament with a 61-33 win over Lockwood on Dec. 19. Eagleburger led Ash Grove with 16 points, Kennedi Climer added 13 points and Khloe Moad ended the game with 12 points.
