Ash Grove Lady Pirates softball splits four games last week/ Pirate baseball picks up two more wins, remain undefeated

Last Saturday, during the Ash Grove Classic tournament, Meagan Hawkins prepares to deliver a punch out fastball to end the frame. Ash Grove won the contest 12-1, which followed a victory over Jasper 9-4.

    The Ash Grove High School softball team split four games last week, defeating Fair Grove and Clever but losing to Mt. Vernon and Diamond.
    On Friday, March 31, Ash Grove traveled to Fair Grove and knocked off the Lady Eagles, 13-10.
    The Lady Pirates hosted and defeated Clever on Thursday, March 30, 5-3. Clever jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the top of the third inning, but Ash Grove answered back with a single run in the bottom of the inning, before adding two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to seal the game.
    Chelsye Graham went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Maddi Grube was 2-3 with a triple and two RBI’s and Nakayla Gray finished the game 1-3 with a double and two RBI’s. Jamalynn Atkinson got the win, going seven innings allowing three earned runs, while striking out three.
    On Tuesday, March 28, Ash Grove traveled to Diamond and came home with a 14-7 loss.
    Diamond scored one run in the first inning, eight runs in the third inning and five runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Pirates scored two runs in the second inning and five runs in the fifth inning.
    Grube went 2-4 with a double and two RBI’s, Gray was 2-4 with triple and two RBI’s, Marissa Andrus went 1-4 with a double and two RBI’s and Ashlyn Gerla finished the game 2-4.
    Ash Grove opened the week by traveling to Mt. Vernon on Monday, March 27, but came home with a close 6-4 loss.
    Ash Grove led 3-2 after the second inning and 4-2 after the third inning but Mt. Vernon’s three runs in the fifth inning and a single run in the sixth inning secured the victory.
    Graham went 2-4 with two doubles, Andrus was 2-2 with a triple and an RBI and Sway Kenney finished 2-3.
    “We had some tough matchups this week,” said head coach Austin Tipton. “Overall, we played well. Just need to get a few things cleaned up. Our hitting has been our strong suit so far this season. We got solid contributions from our entire roster this week and you can’t ask for more than that.”
    The Lady Pirates are 7-5 and were scheduled to host Southwest (Washburn) on Monday before traveling to Sarcoxie yesterday and hosting Stockton tomorrow night.
Baseball
    On the baseball diamond, the Ash Grove Pirates traveled to and defeated College Heights Christian, 19-2 on Friday, March 31, and hosted and beat Mansfield 10-0 on Tuesday, March 10.
    The Pirates are currently 4-0 and were scheduled to travel to Billings on Monday, before hosting Buffalo yesterday and ending the week traveling to Marion C. Early tomorrow.
