Although residents were home during a blaze that claimed a Bois D'Arc home Wednesday, Aug. 10, everyone, including a 4-month-old baby, escaped without harm.
The fire started when a lit cigarette was knocked behind a bed by a dog in the home, said resident Joseph Shipman, who has lived at the Robinson Street two-story house for five years.
"I was sitting on my bed and was smoking a cigarette and the dog jumped up there and she knocked the cherry off, and I didn't think anything about it. And the next thing I know, it was on fire.
Shipman said once the fire was resolved he was confident they would be able to find a place to stay.
"We've got enough friends and family that we'll think of something."
Crews from several nearby fire departments answered the call, including Bois D'Arc, Ash Grove, West Republic, Brookline, Battlefield and Willard.
