Kiwanis kicks off Christmas

A sunshiny day and perfect weather welcomed the annual Kiwanis Christmas Parade to downtown Republic Saturday morning. Thousands of onlookers lined Main Street from Hines Street to downtown taking in the spectacle and even some candy thrown from the participants. This year’s grand marshal was Gerry Pool who rolled down Main in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet Corvette.
This year’s theme was “In the Spirit of Christmas,” a guide the 15 non-profit entries didn’t take lightly.
Leading this year’s show was the Republic High School JROTC Color Guard presenting the flag. Also getting attention was the Republic Middle School and Republic High School bands, as well as the Springfield Central High School Kilties Drum and Bugle Corp., which won first place in the band category. Faith Full Gospel, Hood United Methodist UMC and DECA-FBLA took home first, second and third place honors for floats. Bringing up the end of the parade was Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, helped out by Republic Key Club members.
