Lady Pirates lose to Crane, Spokane, Walnut Grove in tough week

Winter sports have officially started as both the Ash Grove boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were in action last week.

Boys
For the Pirates, they traveled to Crane on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and came back home with a 22-point victory, 69-47.
It was a close first quarter as Ash Grove led 16-11, but a 20-point second quarter, pushed the Pirates to a 36-23 halftime lead. In the third quarter, the defense kicked in as Ash Grove only allowed nine points, while putting up 20 points to increase their lead to 56-32. Crane managed to outscore Ash Grove 15-13 in the final quarter of play but by then it was all over.
Brady Nicholson paced Ash Grove with 31 points and Tyler Tummons added 16 points in the win.
"This was a great start to our season,” said head coach Grant Williamson. “Our guys came out ready to compete and never took their foot off of the gas. There are definitely things to continue to improve on but overall, I was pleased with our effort and execution.” 

Girls
The Lady Pirates lost their second game of the season, losing at Crane on Monday, Nov. 21, 50-24. The Lady Pirates opened the season on Saturday, Nov. 18 at Spokane, and came home with a 61-50 loss.
Morrisville tournament
Both the boys and girls have been competing in Morrisville this week in the Morrisville Tournament. Play was scheduled to begin on Monday night and finish this Saturday.
In the opening round, the top seeded Pirates toppled eight seed Greenfield, 94-24, Monday night. The blowout game included Ash Grove junior Brady Nicholson notching his 1,000th career point in the winning effort. The Pirates next game will be at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, against the winner of the contest between four seed New Covenant Academy and fifth-seeded Macks Creek.
On the girls’ side of the tournament, the seventh seed Lady Pirates battled second seed Walnut Grove, Monday night. The Lady Tigers held a 20-8 lead going into halftime and only added to that advantage thereafter to secure the victory, 54-38. The Lady Pirates were led in scoring by Madison King, 20, followed by Madison Lutz, 4, Cora Duit, 4, Evelyn Carter, 4, Savanna Pratt, 3, and Renley Bagley, 2.
 The Lady Pirates will play again at 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 1, against the loser of the Morrisville/Hillcrest game.
