Lady Tigers beat Branson in final home game of season, look to districts

The regular season has come to an end for both the Willard High School girls and boys basketball teams, as the Lady Tigers knocked off Branson and the Tigers defeated Branson, but lost to Joplin and Rogersville.
Willard hosted Branson on Feb. 18, and beat the Lady Pirates, 47-29.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 17-4 lead and never really had any troubles the rest of the way, extending their lead to 25-11 at halftime. Willard added another 15 points in the third quarter to lead the game, 40-21. The Lady Tigers were outscored 8-7 in the fourth quarter but won the game, 47-29.
“I am so impressed with our team’s performance tonight,” said head coach
J. J. Adamson. “Our kids implemented our defensive game plan and held one of the best individual offensive players in the state to four points. I am extremely proud of these young ladies, that being said, our season is far from over. District play begins on Monday and our goal is to win a district title for the first time since 1984.”
Nona Adamson led Willard with 15 points and Hannah Bird added 10 points in the win. Willard was scheduled to play Parkview in the semifinals of the Class 5, District 12 tournament in Republic on Monday night. Willard is the third seed in the tournament and enter play with a 14-11 record.
Boys
On the boy’s side, Willard traveled to Rogersville and lost to the Wildcats, 58-51
on Feb. 22 and also lost to Joplin 66-59 at Joplin on Feb. 21.
“Both games were about as perfect of a preparation game as you could ask for districts,” said head coach Jeremy Draessler. “Both games were against bigger, more athletic players and we had leads with under four minutes to go in the fourth. In both games we did not execute and turned it over four straight possessions against Joplin and three against Rogersville to end up costing us the game. If it happens next week, our season is over.”
Daniel Abreu led Willard with 21 points against Rogersville and had 16 points against Joplin. Maurice Grayer had 17 points against Rogersville and led Wil- lard with 27 points against
Joplin. Willard hosted their final
home game of the season on Feb. 19 and defeated Branson 58-45. Abreu led Willard with 18 points and Grayer added 15 points in the win.
“It was a quality win for our five seniors,” said Draessler. “It was one of our    more    balanced    scoring games and had a lot of productivity out of everyone who played. Our seniors definitely came up big in that one.”
Willard was scheduled to play Parkview in the semifinals of the Class 5, District 12 tournament at Republic on Tuesday night. The Tigers are the second seed in the tournament and enter play with a 16-10
record.
