Mary Ellen Pope

Mary Ellen (Burris) Pope, the eldest of two daughters born to the union of the late Clarence and Nancy Martha (Ward) Burris, was born May 23, 1935 in Elm Springs, Ark. Pope passed away Jan. 20, 2020 at The Gardens Independent Living in Springfield, at the age of 84.
As a young girl, Pope attended and was confirmed in the First United Methodist Church of Siloam Springs, Ark. She held her faith very dear throughout her life. Pope grew up and attended school in Siloam Springs where she was a member of the 1953 graduating class of Siloam Springs High School. After graduation, she enrolled in Draughon’s Business School in Tulsa, Okla., receiving her certificate of accomplishment in general business studies.
For most of her working years, Pope was employed by American Airlines as a ticket agent. During her tenure she lived in New York City enjoying all the city had to offer. She returned to Arkansas in the mid 1970’s and soon moved to Springfield. She took a job with the Lester E. Cox corporation where she met Wayne Leon Pope.  Mary and Wayne were married on Dec. 30, 1977. With this union, she was blessed with stepsons Danny and Steve. Wayne preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 2009.
Pope is survived by her sister, Nancy Burris of Springfield; two stepsons, Danny Pope and wife, Debbie of Clever, and Steve Pope and wife, Becky of Highlandville; grandchildren, Lorin Pope, Cory Pope and wife, Brittany, Tyler Pope and wife, Christy, Emily Pope, Clayton Pruitt, Sarah Pruitt, Janell Wimberly and husband, Aaron, Susan Sellars and husband, Jake and Carolyn Nichol; 10 great-grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Visitation was at noon, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020. Services followed at 1 p.m., both at Meadors Funeral Home, Republic. Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimers Association. Online condolences may be made at
