Ash Grove sophomore golfer Asher Rust reached the Class 1 state golf championships and played his two rounds on Monday, May 16, and Tuesday, May 17, at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield and finished a respectable 14th, just 14 shots off the leader with a total round score of 170.
Rust shot an 83 on day one and an 87 on day two. This season, Rust was fifth in districts, third in conference and took third place in the Holiday Hills Tournament, Sticks & Stones Challenge and the Aurora Tournament. Rust was selected both all-district and all-conference this season.
“Asher had a phenomenal season,” said head coach Grant Williamson. “Things didn’t always come easy for him as he battled through some things with his swing. He spent a lot of extra time and work to find ways to compete well at tournaments. He wasn’t always pleased with how he played throughout the year and things didn’t always go perfect. He never let it faze him and it’s summed up perfectly with his performance at the state tournament.
Williamson added that Rust’s path wasn’t always easy.
He had some moments where he could’ve laid down and never did. He managed to put together two solid rounds and reach his goal for the season of being an all-state golfer. We are very proud of him.”
