Pirate Zeigler sets school record with 59 points against Lockwood; Pirates fall in districts

The Ash Grove High School boys basketball team ended their regular season with back to back wins and the Lady Pirates won their opening round Class 2, District 11 game after dropping their final two regular season games.
The Pirates hosted Lockwood on Feb. 12 and it took a superhuman effort from Draven Zeigler to knock off Lockwood 92-83, as Zeigler went 22 for 33 from the field and 11 for 12 from the free throw line to finish with 59 points.
“Our seniors really came
to play against Lockwood,” said head coach Josh Reece. “Draven set the tone early and continues his hot streak throughout the night. It was a good conference win for our boys.”
Ash Grove jumped out to a 22-14 first quarter lead, but Lockwood outscored the Pirates 23-18 in the second quarter to cut the Pirates lead to 40-37 at the half. The scoring flipped in the third quarter. As Ash Grove outscored Lockwood, 23-18 to take a 63-55 lead into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter, the Pirates put up 29 points but Lockwood almost matched it
with 28 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Pirates pulled out the 9-point win.
Besides, Zeigler’s 59 points; Briley King added 13 points and Devin Blake ended the game with 10 points.
The Pirates traveled to Walnut Grove on Feb. 14 and knocked off the Tigers, 65-64.
Ash Grove ended the regular season with a 5-20 record and will enter the Class 2, District 11 tournament this week in Marionville as the seventh seed. Crane is the top seed; followed by Verona, Billings, Marionville, Greenfield, Miller, Ash Grove
and Galena. The Pirates fell to the
Verona Wildcats, 64-41, in the first round of the dis- trict tournament, Monday, Feb. 18.
Girls
On the girls side, the Lady Pirates knocked off Billings 47-41 in an opening round district game on Feb. 16 at Marionville. No statistics were made available for this game.
The Lady Pirates traveled to Walnut Grove on Feb. 14 but came home with a 67- 52 loss.
Both teams were tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers
clamped down on defense in the second quarter and only allowed six points, while putting up 18 points to take a 32-20 lead into the half.
The Lady Pirates rebounded in the third quarter by scoring 16 points, but Walnut Grove scored 19 points to increase their lead to 51-36. Ash Grove scored another 16 points in the fourth quarter, while Walnut Grove scored 18 points to win the game, 67-52.
Kennedi Climer led Ash Grove with 15 points and Briley Bagley added 12 points in the loss.
On Feb. 11, Ash Grove hosted Lockwood but lost
56-48. Climer led the Lady Pirates with 18 points and Khloe Moad added 13 points in the loss.
Ash Grove is the third seed in this week’s Class 2, District 11 Tournament at Marionville. Miller is the top seed; followed by Crane, Ash Grove, Verona, Green- field, Billings, Galena and Marionville.
The Lady Pirates are currently 15-11 and were scheduled to play second seeded Crane on Tuesday night.
