Pirates easily knock off Crane in season opener at home

Ash Grove Lady Pirates defeat visiting Crane last week, play in Willard Classic this week
 
The 2021-22 high school basketball seasons have started for Ash Grove High School and the Pirate squads have not disappointed, jumping out of the gate with impressive wins over Crane last week.
Boys
The Pirates hosted Crane on Tuesday, Nov. 23, and came away with 16-point, 65-49 victory, led by a 28-point first quarter attack. At the end of the first, the Pirates had a 28-13 lead that they increased to 42-19 by halftime. Crane did manage to outscore Ash Grove 16-9 in the third quarter but could only cut the Pirate lead to 51-35. Both teams scored 14 points each in the fourth quarter.
“The first game is always an exciting one and our guys were rearing to go,” said head coach Grant Williamson. “We had great energy and got off to a hot start and rode that the rest of the way.”
Sam Moreland paced Ash Grove with 23 points; Brady Nicholson added 22 points and Brock Mooneyham had 10 points in the win.
The Pirates are now 1-0 and will spend this week in Morrisville, taking part in the Morrisville Tournament from Monday, Nov. 29, through Saturday, Dec. 4. Ash Grove was scheduled to take on Walnut Grove in a first round game on Monday.
Girls
On the girls’ side, the Lady Pirates also hosted Crane, but on Monday, Nov. 22, and came away with an easy 64-37 victory.
Khloe Moad led Ash Grove with 16 points; Brittany Gilliland added 13 points and both Madison Lutz and Julianna Torbett had 12 points in the win.
The Lady Pirates are now 2-0 on the young season and will play in the Willard Basketball Classic from Wednesday, Dec.1, through Saturday, Dec. 4, and were scheduled to open the tournament against Blue Springs tonight.
