Pirates finish seventh in Lockwood’s Dennis Cornish Classic tourney

The Ash Grove High School boys and girls basketball teams took part in tournaments all last week, with the Pirates heading to Lockwood and the Lady Pirates hosting the Ash Grove Lady Classic.
Boys
In boys basketball, the Pirates took seventh place in the Dennis Cornish Classic, defeating Jasper, 59-49 on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the seventh place game.
Ash Grove lost to host Lockwood, 48-29 on Friday, Dec. 6 and lost to Golden City, 70-38 on Thursday, Dec. 5. Sam Moreland led the Pirates in scoring for the tournament, averaging
14 points per game. “Although we took our
lumps at times throughout the tournament I felt like our guys learned and got better each day,” said head coach Grant Williamson. “I told them we are a better team now than we were at the start of the tournament and that was our goal. Being able to finish it with a win was a nice bonus.”
Ash Grove is now 1-3 on the season and was scheduled to host Spokane on Tuesday night, before traveling to Greenfield on Friday night.
Girls
The Lady Pirates hosted their annual Ash Grove Lady Classic last week and went
1-2 in the tournament. On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Lady Pirates lost to Miller 53- 39. Khloe Moad and Kennedi Climer each had nine points
in the loss. On Friday, Dec. 6, Stafford knocked off the Lady Pirates, 72-39 to increase the Lady Indians winning streak to 118 games. Moad led Ash Grove with 15 points in the loss.
Ash Grove opened up the tournament with 60-58 win over Marshfield on Monday, Dec. 2. Climer led Ash Grove with 18 points; Moad added another 16 points and Emma Eagleburger ended the game with 10 points.
The Lady Pirates are currently 2-2 and will host Greenfield tomorrow night.
