For the second straight season, the Ash Grove boys’ basketball team is the Morrisville Tournament champions, after their 47-37 win over Chadwick at Morrisville on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Both teams were tied at 12 when the first quarter ended on a half-court buzzer beater from Ash Grove's Brady Nicholson. The Pirates then held Chadwick to just eight points in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 24-20 lead.
Ash Grove increased their lead to 39-33 by the end of the third quarter and put on a defensive clinic in the fourth quarter, allowing just four points for the 10-point victory.
Nicholson paced Ash Grove with 24 points and was named the tournament MVP before joining his teammates, Tyler Tummons and Brock Mooneyham on the all-tournament team.
"I was incredibly proud of our guys,” said head coach Grant Williamson. “Everyone stepped up and did a great job. It was a great team effort against a really tough Chadwick team. We were excited to be able to repeat as tournament champions."
Ash Grove reached the tournament championship game by knocking off Macks Creek, 62-53, on Friday, Dec. 2. It was a close game in the first half, as the Pirates led, 26-23 at the break, but a 20-point third quarter put the game away for Ash Grove.
Nicholson led Ash Grove with 36 points and Mooneyham added 10 points in the win.
"Our guys battled through some adversity and poor shooting, but managed to make the plays needed to win which is a testament to their grit," said Williamson.
The Pirates opened the tournament with an easy, 94-24 win over Greenfield on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
Nicholson led the Pirates with 25 points, Asher Rust had 20 points and Tummons ended the game with 10 points.
"Our guys continue to improve and work hard each day,” said Williamson. “Big congratulations to Brady for scoring his 1,000-career point."
