Five runners, more than ever for Republic, competed in the Class 5 state cross country championship in Columbia. None came home with a medal, but the standout performance for Republic was by freshman Gracie Troester. Troester finished 32nd, about 19 seconds behind the medal slots. But hers was the fastest time of any freshman in the field. She finished in 19:14.5, a personal best. That was about six seconds ahead of the next-best freshman.
Miha Nambara, who had earned a medal last season, turned in the gutsiest performance of the day, staggering across the finish line after a fall.
“As I rounded the corner for the long stretch to the finish, I was ready to do whatever it took to pass however many (runners necessary) to place. But my legs were giving out on me,” Nambara said. “I couldn’t hold myself and I dropped,” she said. “With it being my last high school cross country race, there was never an option of not finishing. I was going to finish what I started.”
Although she had been running 27th after 3,000 meters, just outside the top-25 needed to earn her second career state medal, she finished 67th.
“Right now, I’m still not happy with what happened, but I think when I look back on it, I will be grateful that I gave it all I had and didn’t give up.”
Misora Nambara (116) and Kristin Probst (138) also competed for Republic in the field of 160 runners.
Ethan Haynes, Republic’s only competitor in the boys race, said the experience was different from any other race he’s run because “it was complete adrenaline the whole time. The whole time, I felt compelled to run faster than ever. I felt like I never slowed down at all.”
Haynes gained nearly 10 spots over the last half of the race, finishing 79th overall in a very fast race that featured two runners with sub-15:00 times.
