Republic Lady Tigers earn two more victories in COC play

The Republic girls basketball team beat Nixa and Webb City to run their league record to 6-2. The Lady Tigers opened the week on the road at Nixa with a 44-39 win, then returned home to whip the Lady Cardinals, 62-52.
At Nixa, a switch to zone defense in the fourth quarter helped Republic get separation and pull away from the Lady Eagles after Nixa overcame an 11-point deficit and tied the score at 31 apiece.
“We had trouble containing that penetration, so I was like, ‘Heck, I’m gonna throw a little zone at them,’” coach Kris Flood said. “It saved us for a little while. They went a little bit cold from the perimeter and we were getting the rebounds off of it. We hit some shots and had some really good possessions. Seemed like we got maybe four of five stops there.”
Kaemyn Bekemeier had a big fourth quarter, scoring eight of her team-high 14 points in the final period. Six of those eight points came at the free throw line. Savana Powell-Goodman also stepped up in the fourth quarter, scoring all six of her points during that period. Before that, the Kirby sisters had kept Republic in the game. They combined for 15 of the Lady Tigers’ 20 points in the first half, and at the end of the third quarter, they had a combined 23 of Republic’s 29 points.
Republic scoring: Kaemyn Bekemeier 14, Jade Kirby 12, Jazzy Kirby 12, Savana Powell-Goodman 6
At home against Webb City, Republic came out on top after a sloppy game that included 43 total fouls and 19 missed free throws. The teams also combined for more than 40 turnovers.
“The positive (is) we get a win at home, gearing up for the last two regular season games,” Flood said. “We missed a lot of shots underneath the basket, especially in the first half. We might have been able to extend the lead, but just never really felt comfortable. They got after us defensively and created a lot of turnovers. We’re going to have to get mentally and physically a little bit tougher.”
Kaemyn Bekemeier led Republic with 23 points before she fouled out in the fourth quarter. Jade Kirby and Savana Powell-Goodman also scored in double figures.
Republic scoring: Kaemyn Bekemeier 23, Jade Kirby 14, Savana Powell-Goodman 13, Kaitlyn Ragsdale 9, Delaney Smith 3
