Republic Lady Tigers win two of three games at weekend tournament

Republic won its first two games at the Stephanie Phillips Classic in Springfield, beating Central and Hartville before losing in the championship game to Rolla.
vs. Central...
In the opener, the Lady Tigers came close to setting a new school record for rebounds in a game. Republic hauled down 42 boards, one shy of the 30-year-old record set against Cassville in 1989. Republic also forced 20 turnovers against Central in a 53-45 win to open the tournament.
Freshman Kaemyn Bekemeier led Republic with 14 points, including nine in the final period. Savana Powell-Goodman scored 10 points.
“We had made [rebounding] as one of our emphases. We definitely on the defensive end limit their shots... but we talked about the way they play their zone, we could maybe get some second opportunities,” said coach Kris Flood. “We needed it tonight. We didn’t shoot the ball well from the perimeter. We just kind of did enough and held on ... when they made that run at us. We just had enough there and had some key baskets.”
Republic led by 14 points at halftime, but saw the lead dwindle to just four when Central cut the lead to 47- 43 in the fourth quarter. But Bekemeier scored five straight points to help secure the win.
