Republic softball wins three of four to open season

Piper Dishman winds up to deliver a pitch in Republic’s semifinal game against Sherwood.

The young Republic softball team finished third in a 16-team field at the Marion C. Early Invitational in Morrisville, winning three of four games to start the year. Freshman Piper Dishman was the winning pitcher in two of the three games, striking out 31 batters in 15 2/3 innings pitched.

In the season opener, Dishman allowed just one hit and struck out 13 of 15 batters in an 8-0 win. Annabelle Gerhardt-Hobbs had three base hits for Republic, and Addison Walker added two base hits and two runs batted in.

In Republic’s late game Friday night, EmmaLee Essary drove home Jenna Belcher to spark a come-from-behind victory. Belcher and Addie Brown each had two base hits in that game, and Dishman picked up the win in the circle, allowing four runs in four innings, striking out five and walking three.

In a semifinal game Saturday evening, Republic battled top seed and eventual tournament winner before falling in a 3-2 loss. A two-run homer by all-state catcher Rebekah Riffle was the key blast for Sherwood. The two pitchers — Dishman and Sherwood’s Kennedy Diggs — combined to strike out 26 hitters in six innings. Diggs struck out 15 and Dishman struck out 11. Sammi Watson had an RBI for Republic.

Playing for third place, Republic needed late heroics to pull out an 11-10 victory over Nevada. Lilli Richerson slugged a three-run homer to highlight a six-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. Belcher and Essary also homered in the game for Republic. Freshman Kara Goeke started at pitcher and picked up her first varsity win. Republic finished with 18 base hits, including three each by Belcher and Richerson.
