Republic wins two medals at state track meet
Republic's Alaina Norman and Devon McMillin each earned a medal during a busy two days of competition at the Class 5 state track and field meet in Jefferson City. Nine other Republic athletes competed but did not finish high enough to earn an all-state designation or the accompanying medal.
On Friday, Norman's second javelin throw of the day was 43.03 meters – shattering her previous personal best and school record by more than three meters. That was good enough to earn her a fourth-place medal. She's the first Republic athlete to earn an all-state medal in the javelin throw.
Saturday, Devon Mcmillin cleared the first three jumps without a miss, but at 1.95 meters (6' 4 3/4"), he missed on his first two attempts. Facing elimination, McMillin cleared the bar on his final attempt, putting him in the top eight and earning a medal. Only three jumpers cleared the next height, but the tie-breaker placed McMillin in seventh. The final jump was a personal best for McMillin, who had only started high-jumping midway through this season.
Five of the remaining Republic entries finished 12th in their events. The 4x400m girls relay team of Aaliyah Vasquez, Gracie Woods, Alaina Norman, and Kristin Probst; the 4x800m girls relay team of Miha Nambara, Gracie Troester, Misora Nambara, and Probst; Chase Buford in the long jump; McMillin in the 800m run; and Miller Rountree in the 300m Hurdles.
Rountree also competed in the 110m hurdles, finishing 13th. Landen Finley was 14th in the 400m dash, and Buford was 16th in the long jump.
