Robert Hays

Robert (Bob) Hays, 80, of Clever, passed away Sat- urday, Jan. 4, 2020 in Cox Hospital, Springfield. Hays was born on April 22, 1939, in Republic, to Rutherford Bercherd and Roxie (Pope) Hays.
Hays graduated from Clever High School in 1957, playing basketball all four years of high school.
After high school he joined the United States Army. After serving two years in the Army, he returned home to Clever. On July 2, 1959, he married his childhood sweetheart, Mary (White) Hays and went to work for Royal Typewriter in Springfield. In 1969 he began working for Frisco Railroad in Springfield, as a railroad engineer. He re- tired in 2001 after 33 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Hays leaves behind, his loving wife Mary; his daugh- ters, Lori Engel of Clever, and Jenny Baker of Aurora. Four wonderful granddaughters he adored, Carly Engel of Fayetteville, Ark., Emily Brown and husband, Aaron Brown, of Warrensburg, Erin Baker and Natalie Baker, both of Springfield; a brother, Buddy Hays and wife, Peggy, of Clever; three sisters, Joann Adams, of Spring- field, Jane Stevens and husband, Ron Stevens, of Crane, and Susan Compton and husband, Dan Compton, of Republic. Hays also leaves behind his aunt and uncle, Gerald and Jackie Little, and a large, loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020 in Meadors Funeral Home, Clever. Funeral will immediately follow beginning at 11 A.M. also in Meadors. Burial will be in Delaware Cemetery, Nixa. The family is requesting memorial contributions to Convoy of Hope or to the organization of your choos- ing, in lieu of flowers.
