Volleyballers split matches in opening week

It didn’t take long for new head volleyball coach Allison Davis to get her first win in Republic. The Lady Tigers beat Lebanon in their season opener, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20.
“I really just wanted to make a statement about Re- public volleyball. I wanted to make a statement that we’re a more purposeful team, [and] that we’re going to be playing with heart,” Davis said after the match. “After that first set, they could have fallen apart, but they chose to fight. I keep telling them, you will win a game if you play with your heart, and tonight that’s what they did, and that’s what makes me extra proud of this one.”
Republic jumped ahead 11-6 in the second set and held on from there. In the third set, Republic led 24-15 before Lebanon made things interesting with five straight points. A kill by Carle Ward finished off the final point.
Kailey Manes posted 10 kills to lead the Lady Tigers. Senior Rylee Moseman had 14 assists.
Later in the week, against
perennial volleyball power Springfield    Kickapoo,    Re- public suffered a 2-0 loss (25-10,    25-10).    Kaemyn
Bekemeier led Republic with three kills in that one. Beke- meierandEmmaPearcehad five digs apiece.
