Willard baseball takes third place in Class 5 state baseball playoffs

The final sport at Willard High School came to an end on Saturday, June 1, as the Willard High School baseball team captured third place in the Class 5 state baseball playoff at O’Fallon, knocking off Staley, 8-2.
Willard jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead but had to watch as Staley scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers added another run in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead, before scoring five times to put the game away with an 8-2 victory.
Ethan Thompson led the way for the Tigers, going 3-4 with a home run and a dou- ble, scoring a run and driving in three runs; Cole Biellier was 2-3 with a double and two RBI’s, Jacob VanDoren went 2-2 with two doubles,
two runs scored and an RBI, Noah Wooldridge was 1-2 with a double and two runs scored and Reece Dawson finished the game 1-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
This was the second time in the last seven years that Willard had finished third in the Class 5 state playoffs.
The Tigers played Mar- quette in the semifinal round on Friday, May 31, but lost 4-3.
Willard jumped out to a 3-1 first inning lead but couldn’t hold on as Marquette plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning for the 4-3 win.
Grant Harris went 1-4 in the loss, with a double, a run scored and an RBI, while Biellier was 2-3 in the game with an RBI. Willard finishes their 2019 campaign with a 30-7 record.
