Willard softballers fall in opening round of district play to Carthage, finish season 16-11

The 2019 softball season has come to end for the Willard High School softball team, as the Lady Tigers fell to Carthage 1-0 in nine innings in their opening round Class 4, District 11 tournament at Carthage
on Oct. 16. “It was a well fought game
and a tough way to end the season,” said head coach Ash Leigh Williams. “The girls played their absolute best and just happened to run into a Carthage team
that was also playing well. I am extremely proud of the effort the girls put forth.”
Ryley Richey, Sara Morris and Baylee Gastineau each had a hit in the loss and Sydni Fletcher pitched all nine innings, allowing one run on seven hits, with six strikeouts and one walk.
The Lady Tigers hosted Marshfield on Monday, Oct. 14 and came away with a 12-2 win.
“The    team    really    performed well for the last home and regular game of the season,” said Williams. “The seniors really had a good night all around for their last home game. Almost all of them recorded a hit,
with three of them getting multiple hits. It was a great way to end their careers at the Willard softball field.”
Maliyah Wells led the Lady Tigers with four hits, while also scoring two runs and driving in two runs; Morris and Gastineau each had two hits and two runs scored, and Fletcher and Trinity Gonzalez each had a hit and two RBI’s apiece.
