CARL RAY MAGGARD

Carl Ray Maggard, 87, of Springfield passed away on Jan. 13, 2024, at Mercy Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on Oct. 17, 1936, in Keltner, the son of Lincoln and Gracie Fay (Butler) Maggard.
He graduated from Willard High School and served in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Crewman on the MGR-1A “Honest John” rocket system in Germany from 1959 to 1961.
On Oct. 15, 1966, he married Mildred Joyce Brower. They had two children, Carla and David. He retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons having served as a prison guard in Leavenworth, Kan. and at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield. Following his retirement from the federal government he continued to work for as long as he was able and held several jobs including fishing rod repairman at Bass Pro, security at One Parkway Place, bus aid for Springfield Public Schools and security at Alpha House.
He is survived by his wife Joyce; daughter, Carla J. (Duane) Cones; son, David R. (Christina) Maggard; three grandchildren; his brother, Bill (Barbara) Maggard; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jack L. Maggard; and his grandson, Matthew Carl Maggard.
Visitation and services were held on Friday, Jan. 19, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield followed by a committal service and interment at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.
