DR. T. JAMES “JIM” SAMMON
Dr. T. James “Jim” Sammon, 82, of Springfield passed away on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, from cancer after a brief illness. He was born on Jan. 11, 1942. in San Francisco, Calif., the son of Thomas and Bridget Sammon.
He completed his bachelor’s degree at San Francisco University. He then went on to graduate from St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his residency in pediatrics at Cardinal Glennon Hospital.
He married Kathleen Weissler in 1968. From 1971-73, he served in the US Navy; he was stationed in Alameda, Calif. where he served as a medical officer.
He and his wife then moved to Springfield in 1974, where they raised three daughters. He and his colleagues founded a pediatrics practice where he cared for children for over 30 years. He also spent seven years providing pediatric evaluation services at Burrell Behavioral Health. His commitment to children’s health included advocacy work with many organizations in Springfield. Through the years he served on many committees and boards, including the Mayor’s Commission For Children (The Red Wagon).
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his daughters, Carolyn Sammon MD, Kate Wilkerson and Elizabeth Sammon; and three grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 16, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home A celebration of life was held on Saturday Feb. 17, at Immaculate Conception Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted at Doctors Without Borders (doctorswithoutborders.org), and at Claret Winter Shelter for the Homeless at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield.
