Evans resigns as Clever Police chief following domestic assault
Clever’s former top cop allegedly struck victim repeatedly at home
Michael Evans, the former chief of police for the City of Clever, was arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail on Friday, Nov. 8, after he allegedly struck a woman during a domestic altercation. He is charged with second degree domestic assault.
According to the probable cause statement in the case, the victim told investigators from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office that Evans started a verbal altercation with her on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 7. She said that she didn’t want to fight with him, so she went to the basement of the residence.
The woman said that Evans came down to the basement and continued to yell at her. She didn’t respond, she said, so he ripped a blanket off of her while he continued yelling, and he stood over her while showing her his fist and tried to take her phone from her.
The woman said that she grabbed her phone back from Evans as he hit her with a closed fist, adding that she wasn’t sure how many times he hit her, but that it was at least twice.
A witness in the residence said he heard Evans and the victim yelling from upstairs, and that he ran downstairs when he heard the victim scream. The witness said he saw the victim fall off a couch and her screaming at Evans. The victim was later noted to have multiple bruises and redness on her eyes.
According to the probable cause statement, Evans left the scene in a Clever Police Department vehicle, and disabled the location services on his personal phone, his work-issued phone and the vehicle. He was released from the jail after posting a $10,000 appearance bond on Thursday, Nov. 12. He is due in court again on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025 for a preliminary hearing.
In a letter posted on the Clever Police Department Facebook page, Scott Heckworth, mayor of Clever, stated that Evans resigned his position as police chief on Friday, Nov. 8. Heckworth also referred further questions to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. Evans’ resignation comes roughly four months after he was sworn in as police chief in July of this year.
