As U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers pursue migrants who are in the United States illegally, they are employing detention centers like the Greene County Jail to hold those they take into custody, pending their deportation from the U.S.
As of Tuesday, Feb. 25, 176 immigrant detainees were being held at the Greene County Jail, said Captain Jason Johnson, of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO).
While the GCSO houses the detainees, Johnson said, ICE is the agency responsible for capturing them.
“They were apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” he said. “Some were apprehended locally by ICE. Other ICE pickups are from Chicago, Ill., St. Louis, and Kansas City.”
Detainees apprehended locally include Yara Alejandro-Diaz, of Republic, and Miguel Cruz-Garcia of Monett.
The federal government compensates Greene County for housing the inmates. Johnson said.
“(We are paid) $100 per detainee, per day,” he said.
As to how long the detainees will be held at the Greene County Jail, Johnson said that is out of the GCSO’s hands.
“The exact time frame of their detention is not known,” he said. “A judge will make the decision of deportation.”
The presence of the migrants at the jail has brought about some speculation that they will bring tuberculosis to the other inmates, but the GCSO, via a press release, said that the jail has the means to prevent the spread of the illness there.
“The majority of detainees being accepted into our facility are transfers from other ICE-approved facilities that require testing for tuberculosis,” the GCSO stated in a press release on Friday, Feb. 28. “These detainees have no restrictions and pose no more risk to staff and the community than any other individual booked into the Greene County Jail.”
The press release further stated that the migrants who are not from ICE-approved facilities are being tested for tuberculosis.
“For ICE detainees that have not been transferred from a facility where they had already been screened for tuberculosis, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office has taken a proactive approach to ensure the health and safety for our community, staff, and the incarcerated population,” the press release stated. “This includes isolation, testing, and clearing of all detainees presented to our facility.”
