ROBERT “BOB” BURKS

Robert “Bob” Burks, 103, of Republic passed away on Jan. 21, 2024, surrounded by his family He was born on Sept. 9, 1920, in Springfield, one of two sons born to Sonnie and Lula (Slagle) Burks.
He graduated from Carlsbad High School in New Mexico and went on to attend two years of college. Soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he honorably served his country during WWII, stationed in the Pacific Theatre.
When he returned home from the war, he married Aretha “Barbara” Joule. This union was blessed with three sons, Ed, Jim, and Tom. He worked as a correctional officer for over 25 years, starting his career in Leavenworth, Kan. and retiring from the Federal Medical Center in Springfield. He was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Republic.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Barbara; children, Ed (Trish) Burks, Jim (Cindy) Burks and Tom (Kimberly) Burks; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew; as well as other extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Sonnie Burks.
Visitation and funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 25, at First Christian Church in Republic with Pastor Lee Young officiating. Burial with full military honors followed at Lindsey Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church’s Permanent Fund.
