WALTER V. NEWMAN

Walter V. Newman, 81, of Springfield passed away on Nov. 12, 2024. He was born in Detroit, Mich. on July 17, 1943.
He graduated from Allen Park High School where he met the love of his life, Sharon Quick. They were married shortly after graduation in Taylor, Mich.
He worked for 35 years at 3M Company, starting as a clerk at the Wayne, Mich., plant. He was later transferred to Springfield. He served for 28 years as a board member of the Battlefield Fire District, where he was instrumental in securing funding for manned fire stations, equipment, and a training facility. For his service and dedication, he received several commendations, including a flag flown at the state capitol in his honor and the naming of a conference room in his honor.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon; his sister, Anita (Rich) Wygonik; sister-in-law, Pat Norton; his children: Kim Ficaro, Kurt (Angela) Newman and Kristin (Keith) Mizell; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Springfield.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Walnut Lawn Funeral Home, Ltd. DeGraffenreid-Wood Crematory.
