AG R-4 track to honor Whitehead

During the Feb. 25 Ash Grove Board of Education meeting, it was announced by track coach Jared Langley that among the 11 meets the athletes will be participating in this coming track season, Ash Grove’s meet will be named after former Ash Grove coach Dennis Whitehead, who passed away unexpectedly in 2018. No details were given as to the name of the meet, only that it would be in memory of beloved former track and football coach Whitehead.
In other sports presentations during the meeting, softball coach Pam Swift seemed encouraged by her team.
“I think we’ll have a pretty quick turnaround. I think we’ll be able to compete in our conference pretty well.”
Baseball coach Troy McMain was also enthused about his team’s prospects.
“It’s going to be an exciting spring. We’re going to rely a lot on sophomores.”
Ash Grove athletic director Brian Bagley gave an overall report on student extra curricular activity. Bagley reported that 125 students are involved outside of classes, which includes 17 activities and 40 teams.
In board action during the meeting, the board voted 7-0 to sign with KPM CPA’s and Advisors, as school auditor for the 2018-2019 school year.
The board also voted unanimously to adopt Option #3 (of 3) for the school calendar for 2019-2020. The three options were discussed during a hearing that took place prior to the meeting.
It was also announced, and officially accepted, that summer school will begin June 3.
In the early moments of the meeting, four Ash Grove Elementary School second graders gave oral reports on historic figures, as the figure they were presenting. Eli Cochran presented as Abraham Lincoln; Chase Hansen presented as Billy the Kid; Bowen Carter presented as Johnny Appleseed and Ethan Stevens was comic book icon Stan Lee.
