Ash Grove Board of Aldermen talks highway signage for Main Street biz

The Ash Grove Board of Aldermen was presented with an idea at their Aug. 5 meeting by local business owner Marc Schwenn, that seemed to gain traction. Schwenn, co-owner of Mama Loca’s Cafe asked the board to consider putting signage on U.S. Highway 160 on the west side of town—for eastbound traffic—directing vehicles to Main Street.
Schwenn added that the action had been considered decades ago, but stalled for unknown reasons. The board seemed in favor of pursuing more information on the proposition.
“I do believe it’s something we can look into,” said Alderman Jerry Kane.
“I don’t disagree with that… Thanks, Marc. I do like that idea,” said Mayor Les Gardner.
Although no timetable was given, different types of signs were discussed during the meeting and were being looked into. Also during the meeting, Dolores Coble, also of Mama Loca’s Cafe, encouraged the board to participate in the University of Missouri Extension Leadership program offered to the community.
Police Chief Darin Chance informed Coble that his department was interested in participating but were told it was more for emerging leaders and not established leaders.
In other moments, Schwenn, requested permission to pursue a permit to sell alcohol on the sidewalk in front of his restaurant during Rendezvous. The issue was tabled until further information could be obtained.
In early recognition, Ash Grove Elementary School student Greyson Frey was presented a proclamation by the city for his efforts with the Ash Grove Elementary Carnival. The proclamation officially named Tuesday, Aug. 6, Greyson Fry Day. Fry took pictures with members of the Ash Grove police force following the reading of the proclamation.
