Ash Grove Board of Education accepts budget for 2019-’20

Prior to the Ash Grove Board of Education meeting Thursday, June 27, Superintendent Aaron Gerla gave a Powerpoint presentation during a public hearing for the proposed 2019-2020 school budget.
Although school officials and a local reporter were the only ones present for the 25 minute outline, here are some of the highlights for the upcoming school year.
- The district will be forced to make drastic changes to keep up with the new minimum wage, which will reach $9.50 per hour next year, and $12 per hour by 2023.
- For certified employees, the base pay will be raised $400, which puts the base at $33,020 for the year. The raise places Ash Grove near the top of their conference and competitive in southwest Missouri.
- The district is going to completely shoulder the burden of a 7 percent employee insurance increase, which equates to an extra $382.20 per employee per year.
- Expected school demographics: Ash Grove Elementary (K-3) - 227 students; Bois D’Arc Elementary (4-6) - 141 students; Ash Grove Junior High/ High School - 316 students; total enrollment - 684 students, faculty/staff - 105.
- Big purchases - three new school buses at $85,000 each (including a 25 percent Department of Natural Resources discount for retiring inefficient rigs); 800 new Chromebooks for the district at a cost of $235,000; 25 new computers for new computer lab at a cost of $35,000; and paying off an additional $200,000 on bond issue debt.
