Ash Grove High School’s Lowry named MoEFACS New Teacher of the Year

Jocelyn Lowry, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Ash Grove High School, has been named the Missouri Educators of Family and Consumer Sciences and Human Services (MoEFACS) 2018-19 New Teacher of the Year.
Lowry was nominated for the award by Darci Friberg, a fellow FACS teacher, and four people wrote letters to MoEFACS as to why they believed Lowry was worthy of the award. One of them was Chris Thompson, AGHS principal.
In his letter, Thompson praised Lowry’s work ethic, integration of technology into her instruction and efforts on behalf of her students.
“Over the past year I have watched Jocelyn provide her students hands-on, relevant activities that develop confidence and skills needed to be successful in her classes,” he wrote. “Through countless hours of arriving early and staying late, Jocelyn has worked tirelessly to develop her curriculum. The clarity with which she establishes expectations for her students in all aspects of the class affords them the structure and support necessary for healthy risk-taking. Whether it is through labs, participation in seminar discussions, or extra help sessions, students learn how and why to reach beyond their basic understandings.”
Another letter of support came from Kelly Blankenship, a business educator in the Ash Grove School District. Blankenship stated that Lowry had worked diligently to advance the department’s curriculum, as well as provided opportunities to students through FCCLA.
“Because she has been responsible for writing and implementing much of her own curriculum, she has a solid grasp of the objectives and teaching strategies necessary to make her students successful, Jocelyn effectively teaches the various aspects of FCS curriculum with evident passion,” she wrote.
