Suspect entered neighbor’s house, laid down in bed

An Ash Grove man has been arrested and charged with First-Degree Burglary and Resisting Arrest. Burley Jenkins, 80, was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on Thursday, Sept. 10.
According to the probable cause statement in the case, an Ash Grove resident called the Lawrence County Sheriff’s office to report suspicious activity. The resident’s son reported he’d been upstairs in the residence and heard something going on downstairs. He said he came downstairs to find a man lying in his mother’s bed. The son also reported that the man said “Calm down” and “How are you doing?” before leaving. He described the man as wearing blue jeans and a white thermal-type shirt and had a chocolate lab with him.
The resident herself told the deputy sheriff responding to the call that she’d had some trouble with Jenkins, her neighbor who lives east of her, in the past. She said he’d once cornered her in her driveway, felt her up and tried to make out with her.
The deputy reported that he went to make contact with Jenkins, who met him at the door of his residence wearing a white thermal-type shirt and blue jeans. A chocolate lab was also behind him.
The deputy asked Jenkins what was going on at his neighbor’s house, and Jenkins said he had been walking back from another location when he got tired and went to the neighbor’s house. He said the door was not locked, and he went in and laid on the bed. Jenkins also said he did not realize the neighbor’s son was in the house, and he should have yelled for someone before he entered.

The deputy then informed Jenkins that he was under arrest for burglary, and that Jenkins replied, “B-llsh-t, I am not,” and then stated he was not going to jail. The deputy reported that Jenkins resisted as he attempted to take Jenkins into custody and tried to go back into his house. After a brief struggle, the deputy handcuffed Jenkins and took him to the jail.
A few hours after being booked into the jail, Jenkins was released. He is next due in court on Thursday, Oct. 15 for arraignment.
