Local volunteers honored, grants awarded at 15th annual Republic Community Foundation Banquet

The Republic Community Foundation held their 15th annual Community Foundation Banquet at Republic High School Tuesday, April 9. About 150 people attended the event.
During the banquet, eight people where honored for their volunteer work in the community. Sue Carter, a member of the RCF, said the volunteers were nominated by local organizations.
“Each one of those organizations could nominate a volunteer of the year award to the volunteer in their organization that has provided a service to the community,” she said. “They get to choose a volunteer of the year for their organization, and then we honor the volunteers of the year for those organizations.”
Additionally, the foundation also picked a local person to name as the Republic Community Foundation Volunteer of the Year, an award they give every year. This year, the award went to Britny Goodman, who was also the Republic Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year. Carter said Goodman was chosen by the RCF because of her work in various local organizations, including Kiwanis and the Chamber.
Each volunteer was awarded a plaque or trophy for their service.
During the banquet, the RCF involved Republic students as helpers in this year’s banquet. “For the banquet this year, we did something a little bit different, in that we involved the elementary school all the way up to high school,” Carter said. “For example, in each one of the elementary schools, their Leader in Me program, basically each school contributed. One of the schools, they were the greeters; as people came in, they greeted them. Some people were what we called the seaters; they actually took (people) back to their seat. We had one elementary school, they did all the table decorations; the kids made all the decorations and basically brought them in and decorated. We had little place mats that were decorated by the kids from Lyon Elementary.”
During the banquet, 11 grants were awarded for a combined total of $15,000. Carter said the RCF did this on purpose.
“It’s our 15 year anniversary, and so we matched that with $15,000 worth of grants we’re giving away,” she said. “So, the organizations that were receiving grants, we got it to equal $15,000.”
