Republic gets usual, solid KPM audit report

In the first meeting since the June 2 municipal election, the Republic City Council bid farewell to departing members and swore in two newcomers at the council’s June 16 meeting held at the Republic Community Center.
Leaving the council were John Jones, of Ward 3, and Charlie Brashers, of Ward 4, neither of whom sought reelection. Each were presented plaques of appreciation by Mayor Jeff Ussery.
Following the goodbyes, new council members Christopher Updike, Ward 3, and Jennifer Lynn Mitchell, Ward 4, assumed their seats after being sworn in. Also sworn in were council members Garry Wilson and Eric Franklin, and Mayor Ussery.
Additionally, council member Matt Russell, Ward 3, was again nominated and voted to be mayor pro-tempore, on a 7-0-1 vote, with Russell abstaining.
Audit review...
During Republic’s annual, laborious audit review from John Cummings, KPM CPA, the city received a clean and unmodified opinion from the firm, which is the best finding possible. However, Cummings did cite “significant deficiencies on internal controls,” which in this case was the result of not enough employees on hand for certain duties.
In action during the meeting, the council voted 8-0 to:
- Award a fencing bid at the newly constructed animal control kennel to Carnahan-White, for $53,800.
- Award a bid for observation cages at the same facility to Shor-line, at a cost of $30,287.44.
- Award a bid to CDW-G for the purchase of network switching hardware at a bid cost of $29,800.
- Approve the audit as presented by John Cummings, KPM.
