Annual Fourth of July patriotic party set for Saturday after original pandemic postponement

The Republic Parks and Rec department will hold Have-A-Blast, Republic’s annual Fourth of July celebration, at J.R. Martin Park on Saturday, Sept. 5. The free event will feature live music by the band Members Only and a fireworks display.
According to the city’s webpage covering the event, some changes have been made due to concerns regarding COVID-19. This year, there will be no Kids Zone or Kiwanis Bingo. Food vendors will be at the event, but they will be located at the AMP/tennis court parking lot. Those who want to bring their own food in coolers may do so, but attendees are reminded that Have-A-Blast is an alcohol-free event.
There will also be expanded seating and hand sanitizer provided, and attendees will be encouraged to maintain social distancing by remaining six-feet apart. Canopies, large umbrellas, etc. are not permitted as they can obstruct the view of others.
“Although Have-A-Blast 2020 will look a little different than previous years, we are thrilled to continue on with this great Republic community tradition,” said Republic Parks and Rec Director Jared Keeling. “We hope everyone enjoys the evening and festivities. Numerous event changes and precautionary measures have been put in place due to COVID-19 and to facilitate social distancing.”

Initial postponement
The Greene County Commonwealth first reported Have-A-Blast would be postponed in early June of this year.
At that time, Keeling said the event was being postponed in the interest of public safety.
“While the decision to delay HAB for 10 weeks was difficult, the city of Republic believes it was the right thing to do for all those involved,” Keeling said. “A mass gathering of 8,000 (to) 10,000 people at the end of June that attracts people from all over southwest Missouri seems a little too soon. The extra time until September will allow us to further monitor the ever-changing COVID-19 situation and plan for whatever public health and safety guidelines might be in place as we draw closer to the rescheduled event.”
Have-A-Blast begins at 6 p.m., with Members Only taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. The fireworks display, which will cap-off the event, will take place at 9:45 p.m.
