Republic’s Sweeny Elementary celebrates Leader in Me Lighthouse achievement

Sweeny Elementary celebrated being named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School on Thursday, Oct. 17, by allowing all students involved in gaining the Lighthouse status to take part in a parade on the community track near Lyon Elementary. About 453 students participated in the celebration.
Josey McPhail, Director of Communications for Republic R-3, said the parade allowed everyone involved in Sweeny gaining the status to share in celebrating the achievement.
“We felt it was important for everyone to be able to celebrate this milestone together as one big Sweeny family,” she said. “Becoming a Lighthouse School was a team effort that involved the students, staff members, our families, and community members. We are so thankful that we were able to celebrate everyone’s hard work.”
Fifth graders Izzy Baza and Sammi McDowell, both members of last year’s Lighthouse Team at Sweeny, each said the program had helped both them and the school. Izzy said the “Find Your Voice” lesson had helped him overcome his nervousness at being on the Lighthouse Team.
“This year, I am happy to lead the younger students and show them how the team impacts Sweeny,” he said.
Sammi also said she’d gained new confidence as a public speaker from being on the Lighthouse Team.
“I used to be shy,” she said. “After I joined the Student Lighthouse Team, I got the confidence to talk in front of the school.”
Both students also said the program is continuing to benefit Sweeny this year.
“Each month we learn about each habit and we learn different ways that we can improve ourselves,” Izzy said. “It feels like you have accomplished something really big, and that’s because we have.”
Sammi said the program had helped her develop her sense of responsibility.
“It helps me be more responsible because we have jobs in the school,” she said. “We have a lot of responsibilities which is fun and makes you a better person.”
