Republic R-3 Superintendent Wistrom announces retirement

Republic Superintendent of Schools Dr. Chance Wistrom announced via a two-part video that he will retire as superintendent at the end of the 2019-20 school year after spending the last eight years leading the district.
Wistrom’s career in education spans 24 years. In addition to his time as superintendent of schools in Republic, he has also served as a science teacher, principal of Parkview High School in Springfield, and superintendent of schools in Miller. His last day as superintendent will be June 30, 2020.
Wistrom announced his retirement on Friday, Dec. 20. In the first part of the video, he said his decision had come after considerable contemplation. He also expressed pride in the district itself.
“This has come after much reflection, as I am so very proud of the school district that we have created together,” he said. “Through a lot of hard work, perseverance, (and) planning, we’ve created a destination school district that educators want to come to (so they can) grow their talents, better learn to serve youth, and most importantly, a district that moms and dads strive to send their children to, knowing that their children are going to be their No. 1 priority, and we have servant-minded folks who are very talented with tremendous amount of support to prepare their children for a successful future.”
Wistrom said his reason for retiring is to dedicate more time to his family.
“There comes a time when you realize that life is short,” he said, “and as you serve the needs of so many, you realize you neglect service towards those closest to you. So, after reflecting with mentors (and) family, and I realized that I think that’s the case with me. So, I’m stepping outside of the role of superintendent and pursuing a venture outside of public education, where I can serve in another way.”
While he’s stepping down as superintendent, Wistrom assured viewers they would still see him around in Republic.
“The Wistrom family is not going anywhere,” he said. “We believe in the Republic community; there’s no other place we’d want to raise our family, and most importantly, we believe in the Republic School District. There’s no other school district, and there’s no other team that I would want to partner with me in preparing my children for a successful future in what seems at times like a more uncertain world.”
Announcing Pearce…
In the second part of the video, Wistrom announced that Dr. Matt Pearce, the assistant superintendent of Republic Schools, will take over as superintendent for the 2020-21 school year. His first day in his new role will be July 1, 2020.
Wistrom told viewers Pearce was the perfect choice for the job.
“He’s a man who is probably the finest leader and man I have ever had the privilege to work with,” Wistrom said. “His talent, intellect and work ethic (are) only exceeded by his big heart and commitment to Republic’s first priority.”
Pearce appeared in the second part of the video with Wistrom.
“I’m humbled and honored to have the opportunity,” Pearce said, “and I look forward to July 1 and a new endeavor. (I’m) so excited to get going.”
