Two accidents, one fatality on I-44 occur within about an hour of each other

Two accidents, one resulting in a fatality, took place on I-44, two miles west of Springfield, on Thursday, Dec. 27 within about an hour of each other.
The first accident happened at about 4:30 p.m. According to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patorl, a 2006 Kenworth tractor-trailer being driven east on I-44 by Scott Hines, of Glendale, Ariz., struck a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Scott Rothrock, of Springfield. Rothrock’s vehicle in turn struck a 2015 Kenworth T680 that was being driven by Jose Roberto Aguilar Flores, of Mexico.
Hines’ vehicle went off the right side of the roadway and came to rest, as did Flores’. Rothrock’s vehicle came to rest in the roadway.
Rothrock, 35, was airlifted by Cox Air to Mercy Hospital; he later died of his injuries on Friday, Dec. 28. Hines, 51, and Flores, 34, were not injured. All drivers were wearing safety devices.
Hines’ vehicle received extensive damage, Rothrock’s vehicle was totaled, and Flores’ vehicle received moderate damages. All three vehicles were towed from the scene.
The second accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. According to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2008 Chevrolet Impala being driven west on I-44 by Asukulu Mbilizi, of Springfield, struck a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Torey Fugate, of Willard, in the rear.
Mbilizi, 30, received minor injuries and was transported by Cox EMS to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Fugate was not injured. Both drivers were wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.
Both vehicles received moderate damage and were towed from the scene.
