Willard man killed in mysterious tractor mishap

A Willard man was killed when he fell off a tractor he was working on, and it then ran over him. Bill Bartley, 73, was working on his tractor inside his barn on Wed., Dec. 5, when the accident happened.
Fire Chief Ken Scott, of the Willard Fire Protection District, said Bartley’s wife came out to the barn to remind him of an impending visit by the couple’s grandchildren and discovered him under the tractor; she immediately called 911. Scott added that the circumstances which caused Bartley to fall off of his tractor, and the reason that the tractor was running, were unknown.
Members of the Willard Fire Protection District and Greene County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 911 call. Scott said fire crews removed the barn roof and Henry’s Wrecker Service used a crane to lift the tractor off of Bartley.
A visitation was held for Bartley at Greenlawn Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 9; a memorial service was held on Monday, Dec. 10.
Scott said he personally knew Bartley to be a warm, outgoing individual who would be missed by all who knew him.
“Mr. Bartley was well known in the Schuyler community and always had a smile and a handshake for everyone,” he said. “I have personally known the family for 50 years and they are truly a great family.  Bill will be missed.”
