Willard woman charged with second-degree murder

Jackie Baker accused of killing man, tampering with evidence in horrific scene in Willard
A Willard man, 74, is dead following an alleged murder committed by his in-home caregiver.
Jackie Baker, 49, an in-home caregiver for the victim of the crime, is in custody following an apparent murder of her roommate and eventual confession.
According to the probable cause statement filed by the Willard Police Department, Baker said she killed the victim after waking up to him in her bed with her. She fought him off and moved around the house with him, with Baker reporting that the victim was grabbing her and holding her tight. Baker then kicked the victim in the chest while in his bedroom; later she checked on the victim and found that they weren’t breathing. She admitted in a post-Miranda interview with authorities that she administered Narcan to the body because she believed it would help. This all happened on Dec. 4.
Autopsy nets grisly results
Per the probable cause statement, the autopsy revealed the victim suffered blunt force lacerations above the right eye and in the mouth, a sharp laceration above the lip about six centimeters deep, numerous broken bones, bruises and a possible brain bleed. It was concluded that the victim died of strangulation and blunt force trauma.
On Dec. 6, a Willard police officer was planning to visit a person living in an apartment complex located at 939 Fox River Avenue. In error, the officer knocked on Baker’s door. The officer noted that Baker seemed visibly nervous.
Baker borrowed truck for hauling
On Dec. 7, Baker borrowed a truck from a witness who lives with Baker’s brother. Baker had the truck for several hours, at which point the witness called and asked if she stole it or wrecked it. After returning the truck later that evening, Baker told her brother that she got into a fight with her roommate and he had died. The witness told Baker that she needed to turn herself in. Upon examination, the witness noticed his truck smelled like cleaning agents, was missing a floor mat, and had three stains on the floorboard and passenger seat.
That same day, Baker contacted a friend of hers, identified as Witness 2 in the report, to help her move some furniture from her storage building into her apartment. Witness 2 helped Baker move two pieces of furniture, as well as a box.
Reportedly, the woman turned herself in the following day, Dec. 8. She was then placed on a 24-hour hold in Greene County Jail and released on Tuesday. The probable cause statement explains that the woman gave her phone to someone identified as Witness 3 prior to turning herself in.
Following her release, Baker stayed at Witness 3’s trailer. During a search, which uncovered bedding that appeared to be bloodstained that Witness 3 said belonged to Baker, she drove up, saw the authorities, and then drove off. She was later stopped by authorities less than one mile away. During a search of her vehicle, a pink iPhone that had presumably been erased, reset, or just updated was found along with a box of Narcan. She was arrested again that same day, Dec. 10.
Blood about the apartment
During a search at Baker’s apartment, authorities noticed the presence of what seemed to be odor-reducing measures. A pot on the stove contained boiled citrus fruits, there was a scented candle lit, and a folder was taped over the air vent in the victim’s bedroom. The statement claims that the victim was badly bruised and had large pieces of Baker’s hair in his hands. Baker’s pants were located in the bathroom and appeared to have blood stains on them. In addition, documents containing information about the lease agreement and information about occupancy rights under the Violence Against Women Act sat on the kitchen table with dried blood on them.
The document also states that, beginning on Dec. 2, Baker began making withdrawals from the victim’s bank account. It also claims that this money was a reasonable amount for the suspect to flee.
Baker held without bond
Baker is currently being held without bond at the Greene County Jail. She faces charges of murder in the second degree, tampering with physical evidence in felony prosecution, stealing $750 or more, and purposeful financial institution account fraud, totaling four felonies.
