Easter Egg Hunt canceled, what to do with 10,000 plastic eggs?
One of the highlights of spring in Republic every year is the Park and Rec Department’s annual Easter Egg Hunt, where hundreds of kids gather to grab as many prize-filled plastic eggs as they can. However, due to social distancing requirements brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s hunt had to be canceled. Canceling the hunt has left the Parks and Rec Department with a unique dilemma: What do they do with the 10,000 eggs they bought for the Easter Egg Hunt?
Jennafer Mayfield, the department’s assistant Parks and Recreation director/community outreach superintendent, said they are looking at ways to use the eggs with summer activities.
“We have already been thinking about other unique, out-of-the-box ways we could utilize the eggs in 2020,” she said. “They could be incorporated into pre-movie activities at The Amp, maybe figure out how to make them glow for an evening hunt. Some indoor aquatic facilities host ‘dive-in’ egg hunts, this could be a possibility at the Republic Aquatic Center this summer.”
If nothing else, Mayfield said they can put them into storage until next spring.
“If we are unable to use the eggs this year, they can be stored and used for our egg hunt next year, saving that expense in 2021,” she said.
Mayfield said the Parks and Rec Department hated calling off the egg hunt, but the safety of the children made it necessary. She said they hope everyone will come to next year’s hunt.
“Canceling the Easter Egg Hunt was definitely a bummer, but necessary in order to keep our community safe,” she said. “Save the date for next year’s egg hunt on Saturday,
March 27!”
