Willard students go on tiger hunt during break

Willard students had the chance to get outdoors and have some fun while competing for prizes during a new challenge called the Tiger Hunt.
Created by the Willard Middle School’s J-Club, the Tiger Hunt challenged the students and their families to put the picture of a Tiger or a Tribal W on their property somewhere where they could be seen from the street, such as a house or car window, or make a chalk drawing on their driveway. About 70 families put Tigers or Tribal Ws on their property.
The challenge was open to all Willard students. Students who took part in the challenge looked for the Tigers and Tribal Ws and took pictures of each one they found on their phones. Afterwards, they made collages of the pictures they took and posted them to the Willard Middle School’s Facebook page. The deadline to post a collage was Friday, April 3.
The Tiger Hunt was created by the J-Club, a middle school club which creates a monthly newscast.
“After the school had been placed on hold due to COVID-19, J-Club met via Zoom and discussed ways to help students stay connected and decided they wanted to produce a newscast from their homes,” said Amelia Yates, assistant principal at Willard Middle School. “While discussing what they would like to include in the newscast, they (decided) to provide students with some ideas of things that they could do while they were at home with their families. (They discussed) the idea of a scavenger hunt, which led them to … develop the Tiger Hunt.”
Yates said both J-Club and the students who took part in the Tiger Hunt both benefitted from the challenge.
“J-Club students (gained) a sense of pride knowing that they were able to have a impact on their community,” she said.
Kayla Peak, a Willard Middle School student, won first prize, a $25 Amazon gift card. Second place, a $10 Sonic gift card, went to Makenzie Bailey, a Willard South student.
