Chapter DP, Ash Grove 100 years old
Chapter DP, Ash Grove was founded December 7, 1921, and held its first meeting at the home of Mrs. Helen Candler. The officers were elected: President, Mrs. Helen Chandler; Vice President, Mrs. Laura Spake; Recording Secretary, Mrs. Malta Moore; Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Gladys Rice; Treasurer, Mrs. Anna Culbertson; Chaplain, Mrs. Adeline Miller; Guard, Mrs. Erma Doss. Other charter members were: Mrs. Dames, Anna Comegys, Flossie Likins, R. E. Hulett, Virginia Orr, Zetta Griggs, Grace Buckner and Hallie Lightfoot Moore.
Laura Spake and Mary Hulett began their day at the train depot awaiting the arrival of two trains. The train from the West was carrying Mrs. Lulu Commack of Kansas City, the state PEO organizer. The train from the East was bringing a delegation of women from Chapter BG in Springfield
to assist.
Looking back 100 years ago at Chapter DP’s history one notes how imaginative and talented the early members were. Roll call was answered with various responses such as quotations, imitating birds, American heroes, queerest Christmas presents, favorite home remedies, Mother-Goose rhymes and Shakespeare.
Chapter DP is proud to continue to celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College; and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.
