Candidates vie for seats in Aug. 4 primary
Republican candidates for Greene County Commissioner District 1
Sonya Murray Anderson
Age: 50
Education: Attended Missouri State University
Occupation: Small Business Owner/State Representative District 131
Why should someone vote for you? I am a lifelong resident of western Greene County, a wife to my husband Jim for over 30 years and a mother of two sons. My background is in business and agriculture, and I understand the day-to-day challenges our businesses face when it comes to burdensome regulations.
As a conservative leader in the Missouri House, I have a consistent record representing our traditional family values. I have passed legislation to protect life, defended our 2nd Amendment rights and our property rights.
During my time in Jefferson City, I have experience in many areas from balancing a multibillion-dollar state budget to serving in several leadership roles. I am proud to have been the first and only woman to Chair the Conservation and Natural Resources Committee. I serve on the Fiscal Review Committee which is responsible for reviewing the fiscal impact of proposed policy to our states budget. I served as Co-Chair for the Joint Committee on Solid Waste Management District Operations and Vice Chair of the Regulatory Reform and Oversight Committee – just to name a few. I also serve in House Leadership as Majority Caucus Chair.
Rusty MacLachlan
Age: 58
Education: Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Central Missouri - Go Mules!
Occupation: Home Builder and Real Estate Investor
Why should someone vote for you? I am the best qualified candidate for the position. The duties of the three Greene County commissioners include among other things, oversight of the building of the new $160 Million county jail, Greene County Highway department, building regulations, the construction of all new county buildings, and the maintenance, and remodeling of all existing county owned buildings, potential adoption of any new building codes, etc. Our current presiding commissioner has 16 years of experience in the state legislature. Our Eastern District commissioner also has served in Jefferson City. The one skill set that we are not lacking is experience in Jefferson City. To add a 37-year business owner with extensive experience in construction to the team of three, especially when we are spending $160 million on a new jail is a solid business decision that I believe will best meet the needs of our county. Additionally, I have served several years on the Springfield Traffic Advisory Board, and the Board of Directors at Habitat for Humanity.
