Football Tigers fall to Webb City in lopsided district semifinal game

The Willard High School football season came to end Friday, Nov. 8, as the Tigers traveled to Webb City for a semifinal Class 4, District 6 game but came home with a 58-18 loss.
Willard scored on the second play from scrimmage, a 75-yard pass from Reece Dawson to Maurice Grayer, to put the Tigers up 6-0, but that must have woken up the Cardinals as they would go on to score 44 unanswered points.
On the Tigers next offensive possession, Dawson was sacked in the end zone, followed by a 45-yard touchdown run by Terrell Kabala to put Webb City in front for good.
The Cardinals blocked a punt and then scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass to increase their lead. After an interception, Webb City ran it in from 24 yards out, then had a three-yard run and finally a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown to sprint out to a 37-6 lead.
Willard would add two scores in the second half, before falling to Webb City
58-18. “I am really proud of our
guys and the great year they had,” said head coach Brock Roweton. “I feel like we are in the top 10 of class 4, unfortunately, we played the best class 4 team Friday. Webb was really good Friday and the game snowballed on us in the first half. You can’t have that happen against a team as talented as them. It was a great season to be a part of. We had a lot of fun in the summer time preparing, at practice working together, and in games figuring out ways to win. We will really
miss these seniors.” Dawson finished the
game, 8-18 for 205 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Grayer had two catches for 90 yards and a touchdown, while Noah Pfeifer had one catch for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Austin Joplin had one carry for 48 yards and a touchdown; Marshall Swadley ran the ball eight times for 47 yards and Garrett Rice finished the game with 33 yards on seven carries.
Willard finished their season with a 5-6 record.
