Republic doubled its number of state qualifiers from last season, advancing four wrestlers to the state tournament in Columbia. Phillip George, Corbin Massey, Keaton Overcast, and Maddox Wilkins earned their spots with top-four finishes at the district tournament at Ray-Pec High School Friday and Saturday.
George, a senior, earned his slot at the state tournament by beating Zach Pruitt of Lee’s Summit in the 113-pound semifinal. He finished second in the division, losing in the championship match to Anthony Stotts of Neosho. George previously qualified for the state tournament in 2022.
Massey, a freshman wrestling at 106 pounds, heads to Columbia for the first time after a third-place finish in the district. After a semifinal loss, Massey defeated Tucker Feagens of Neosho and Lucas Allen of Joplin to close out his day.
Overcast is headed to the state tournament for a second time as a sophomore. He finished third in the 132-pound weight class. A win over Grady Huntley, of Carthage earned his slot in Columbia, and a subsequent win over Lucas Gideon secured third place.
Wilkins returns to Columbia for a second time as a senior, after a state bid as a sophomore in 2022. He finished second, winning every match until a loss to Johnny Williams, of Ozark in the championship round.
Republic had two others on the cusp of qualifying. Manning Wilkins and Chase Hicks both lost one-point decisions in the so-called “bubble round” that determines who qualifies for the state tournament and who doesn’t.
Four state qualifiers is the most for Republic since 2016. It’s also the most since Republic moved to Class 4.
