Greene County Sheriff Arnott accepts U.S. Marshal position

Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott has been nominated to serve as the United States Marshal for the Western District of Missouri.

Arnott, a longtime leader of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, will accept the position after serving the county for nearly 40 years.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office March 9, Arnott was nominated for the position by President Donald Trump.

He is set to take over the position following a Senate confirmation. In the meantime, Arnott will still serve with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, as he has done for the last 37 years.

“I have been incredibly blessed to serve the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Greene County for the past 37-plus years," said Arnott. “I truly love this profession, the dedicated staff I work alongside, and the community we serve. During the Senate confirmation process, I will continue to serve as Greene County Sheriff. I will also be working closely with the Greene County Commissioners to ensure a smooth transition to an appointed Greene County Sheriff and to assist in preparing for a future election. This process will take place after I am confirmed by the United States Senate, which may be several months.”

Federal judicial districts 

According to the U.S. Marshals website, there are 94 federal judicial districts, at least one in each state, with each district being assigned a marshal.

The job of a marshal, per the website, is to enforce the federal courts. They protect federal judiciary officials, manage and sell seized assets acquired by criminals, and cover the housing and transportation of federal prisoners in addition to operating the Witness Security Program.

The press release from the sheriff's office states that the U.S. Marshals is the oldest law enforcement agency in the country, established by George Washington in 1789. The positions remain a presidential appointment.
