Lady Pirates finish second in Walnut Grove Holiday Classic

Ash Grove boys fall to Billings Wildcats in fifth place game at Walnut Grove tournament, look to Marion C. Early
The Lady Pirates finished up the Walnut Grove Holiday Classic by playing host Walnut Grove in the championship game on Tuesday, Dec. 30, in Walnut Grove and lost 57-53 in heated contest down the stretch. The game got chippy, with thunderous disapproval coming from both sides of the jam-packed stands up until the end.
The Lady Tigers led 17-15 after the first quarter and after both teams scored 11 points each in the second quarter, Walnut Grove entered halftime with a 28-26 lead. The Lady Pirates fought back in the third quarter and were able to tie the game at 40-40. In the final quarter of play, the Lady Tigers put up 17 points, to Ash Grove’s 13 points to win the game by four points.
Bristol Lathrop paced Ash Grove with 17 points, Millison Sapp added 14 points, and Brooke Nicholson ended the game with 13 points. The lady Pirates ended the tournament with a second place trophy and two all-tournament selections in Lathrop and Sapp.
The Lady Pirates are 8-3 on the season and were scheduled to travel to Chadwick on Monday night before playing at Marion C. Early Friday night.
Boys basketball
The Ash Grove High School boys basketball team also traveled to Walnut Grove to finish up the Walnut Grove Holiday Classic. Falling to Billings in the fifth-place game on Monday, Dec.29, 62-28.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 15-8 first quarter lead and then held the Pirates to only three points in the second quarter to lead 25-11 at the half. Ash Grove shot the ball better in the third quarter, scoring 12 points but Billings answered with 20 to increase their lead to 45-23. The Wildcats played great defense in the final quarter, holding Ash Grove to five points, while pulling away with a 17-point quarter to win the game 62-28.
Easton Rust and Jaden Hance each had seven points to lead Ash Grove.
The Pirates are 7-5 on the season and were scheduled to host Billings last night before traveling to Marion C. Early on Friday night.
