Pirates lost close one to Marion C. Early; merciful season’s end nears

The Ash Grove High School girls and boys basketball teams were both in action last week. As the girls played Pierce City and Miller, the boys took on Pierce City, Marion C. Early and Miller.

          Girls
The Lady Pirates traveled to Miller on Thursday, Feb. 6 and came home with a 52-48 win over their nearby nemesis.
Ash Grove jumped out to a 16-9 first quarter lead and then increased that lead to 34-18 by the half. Miller outscored Ash Grove 8-7 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 41-26. Ash Grove had a rough fourth quarter, as Miller outscored the Lady Pirates 22-11 but Ash Grove was able to hold on for the 52-48 win, which was a longtime coming.
Kennedi Climer led Ash Grove with 18 points; Khloe Moad chipped in 16 points and Emma Eagleburger ended the game with 12 points. The Miller Lady Cardinals remain the trickiest obstacle to overcome in Ash Grove’s path to the state playoffs.
The Lady Pirates hosted Pierce City on Monday, Feb. 3 and won the game easily, 68-36.
Ash Grove jumped out to a 26-5 first quarter lead and increased that lead to 34-15 by halftime. The Lady Pirates added another 16 points in the third quarter and 18 points in the fourth quarter to win the game by 32 points.
Climer led Ash Grove with 24 points and Moad added 12 points in the win.
Ash Grove is now 16-5 on the season and were scheduled to host Pleasant Hope on Monday, and will travel to Marionville tomorrow night.
    
           Boys
On the boys side, Ash Grove traveled to Miller on Friday, Feb. 7 but came home with an 82-44 loss.
The Pirates traveled to Marion C. Early, Morrisville, on Thursday, Feb. 6 and lost in a close contest, 53-51.
Marion C. Early jumped out to an 11-8 lead and increased their lead to 25-23 at the half. Marion C. Early outscored Ash Grove 12-11 in the third quarter but was outscored by Ash Grove 17-16 but it was not enough as the Pirates lost by two points.
“This one was a tough battle back and forth,” said head coach Grant Williamson. “We got off to a sluggish start, but were able to battle back in to it. Credit to MCE, they made a play late and that ultimately was the difference.”
Sam Moreland led Ash Grove with 16 points and Codey Raney added 11 points in the loss.
The Pirates opened the week by hosting Pierce City on Tuesday, Feb. 4 but fell to the Eagles, 75-33.
The game started well for Ash Grove, as they only trailed 22-19 at the end of the first quarter, but that is was close as they would get. Pierce City outscored Ash Grove, 30-8 in the second quarter, 19-5 in the third quarter and 4-1 in the fourth quarter.
 “Pierce City is a really good team,” said Williamson. “They got after us defensively with their athletes and made things difficult.” 
Jake Thompson led Ash Grove with nine points; Brock Mooneyham, Moreland and Raney each had six points in the loss.
The Pirates are now 1-18 on the season and were scheduled to host Pleasant Hope on Tuesday night, and will travel to Marionville on Friday night.
