Potential legislative changes discussed at Republic Board of Education meeting

Dayton Holman, assistant site leader at Republic Schools, sits in a blue polo surrounded by the board of education.

The Republic Board of Education met for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Feb. 19 to hear about potential changes being decided by the Missouri legislature, a building’s boundary adjustment and a summary of an extensive survey process undertaken by the school.

Perhaps the most pressing issue facing the board was brought forward by Superintendent Matt Pearce during his report. A key part of his presentation to the board was the various house and senate bills that could impact the way the district conducts its business. The first, and perhaps most important, of these bills was HB 2780, which stands to negatively impact Republic School District to the tune of $1.6 million. According to Director of Communications Nikki Faith, that sum is equal to 20 teachers' salaries and benefits or 10 teachers and five school buses. According to Pearce’s report, HB 2780 would make ballot language difficult and complex on any future bond or levy proposal brought forward in the district and change how new homes and businesses are assessed.

HB 1766, another bill mentioned in the report, could cost the district as much as $276,622 annually. It is similar to the previously mentioned bill in that it changes how new construction and improvement impact district revenue. Pearce said it will effectively reduce the ability for the district to accommodate for increases in the student population.

Pearce encouraged attendees to contact their local legislators as he had.

Boundary adjustment
The board also approved a boundary adjustment that was previously brought forward by Assistant Superintendent of Operations, Jason Perkins. The new plan will adjust elementary school boundaries to have a more equitable distribution of students across the elementary schools. The district has adopted a new plan that will move a new subdivision on Hines Street into the Lyon Elementary boundary, where it would have been in Price Elementary’s attendance boundary.

Survey says
The board also heard from Josey McPhail, Director of Engagement and Community Relations. She detailed the results of her extensive surveys she distributed in the district in 2025. The surveys cover a variety of topics and were given out to teachers, parents and students alike. From information gathered from over 1,000 respondents, district staff, students and parents were more than 80 percent satisfied with the school's performance in almost every metric.

The board also made time to honor the district’s monthly RepMo hero, this week choosing to honor Dayton Holman, assistant site leader. He received a $100 bill from Pearce as well as $500 to spend for his department.
